Weekend Portrait Painting Workshop
Join me for a two day portrait painting workshop in my studio in Winscombe, Somerset. Working directly from a life model, we will look at composition, form and colour to construct a portrait in water mixable oils.
A full two days workshop with me in my light and spacious studio at the base of the stunning Crook Peak, a National Trust landscape on the Mendip Hills, just 35 minutes’ drive from Bristol, in a creative, relaxed, non-judgemental and supportive setting. Improve your understanding of using a live model and photographic references to paint a portrait, creating a painting using water-mixable oils.
Under my guidance I will introduce how I approach working with a live model, looking at composition, form and colour to create a portrait using water-mixable oils. We will begin by doing some quick life drawing poses to warm up, looking at different compositions, shape and form. Once you have decided on your portrait composition you will draw out the portrait in pencil first, either using the grid method or freehand, followed by demonstrations throughout the two days by me of how to mix realistic skin tones and apply them to your portrait drawing. You will work from the life model and photographic references, making the workshop suitable for all experience levels.
No previous painting experience is necessary, and all materials, a vegetarian lunch, tea, coffee and biscuits are included.

Reviews
"I feel so fortunate to have booked a space on Katie's portrait workshop. I learnt so much that I will be able to use in my own work. A wonderful experience from start to finish. Not only an amazing and patient tutor but such a great host too. It was so lovely to work at her beautiful studio in the countryside and be welcomed into her creative world. She is a truly interesting and interested person. We had a delicious homemade lunch and it was such an added bonus to meet so many other amazing fellow participants. I would highly recommend a day with Katie". Kath
“You asked for feedback and I have to say that I can’t think of anything that could have been done better, the format of the day was spot on with just the right balance of structure and flexibility and you painting alongside us with the demonstration was really helpful and interesting“. Dee
“Thanks again for a fantastic workshop on Saturday. Everything about the day was perfect. Thanks for all the preparation work you put in creating the boards and gridding them up so that we could all focus on drawing and painting for the whole day. The demonstrations of your painting techniques were excellent and really nicely broken down by each of the facial features. Thanks too for laying on lunch as well as all the snacks throughout the day. Even the environment was great. I’m very jealous of your amazing studio :)”. Mike
“Thanks again for such a brilliant day and for all this info, you’ve inspired me to really go for it now lol! Going to have a mellow afternoon of working on my painting and getting those skin tones down.Thank you so so much once again”. Andrea
